Volunteer Staff Program

The Salmo Climbing Gym is a community-run, non-profit gym, and our volunteer staff are the heart of what makes this space possible. In return for helping keep the wall open and welcoming, volunteers gain access to meaningful perks, flexible scheduling, and a strong community connection.

If you love climbing, community, and being part of something that matters, volunteering is one of the best ways to get involved.

The best way to get in touch is through a free account on GymDesk. This account is just a starting point. If you decide to climb with us, you can purchase a punch pass or membership at any time using the same account.

Why Volunteer?

We know your time is valuable. Our volunteer program is designed to be low-barrier, flexible, and rewarding, with perks that grow alongside your level of commitment.

Volunteer benefits may include:

  • Free or discounted climbing access

  • Access to the wall outside of scheduled drop-in hours (when available)

  • Pro deals and industry discounts as they become available

  • Reciprocal benefits with local climbing gyms (where partnerships exist)

  • Flexible, self-scheduled shifts

  • Opportunities for skill development, certifications, and leadership roles

  • Being part of a small, supportive climbing community

Perks and access increase with time commitment and level of involvement.

Flexible & Easy Scheduling

Volunteering is designed to fit around work, school, and life.

  • Shifts are scheduled in advance

  • Time commitments can be as little as a few hours per month

  • Volunteers can choose shifts that work for them

  • Additional opportunities exist for those wanting to be more involved

What Volunteer Staff Do

Volunteer staff support safe, smooth operation during open climbing hours. Roles may include:

  • Opening and closing the wall

  • Checking in climbers and confirming waivers

  • Monitoring the space for safety

  • Welcoming new climbers and answering basic questions

  • Supporting a positive, inclusive environment

Volunteers are not instructors by default, and no advanced climbing ability is required.

Training & Support

All volunteers receive training before working shifts independently. Training covers:

  • Gym policies and safety procedures

  • Risk management and emergency protocols

  • Clear expectations and support pathways

Additional training and certifications are optional and supported for volunteers who want to grow into expanded roles.

You don’t need to be an expert climber. We’re looking for people who are:

  • Friendly, reliable, and community-minded

  • Comfortable helping others feel welcome

  • Aligned with our values of safety, inclusion, and mutual respect
